Big data is a term for large or complex data sets that are too complex for standard data processing applications. Big data consists of data, capture, analysis, curation, search, indices, retrieval, storage transfer, security and information privacy. Data created from multiple systems across an enterprise from different OSâ€™s, applications, databases may all be aggregated and disseminated in any configuration desired to aid mostly in organizational decision support. Big data has become synonymous with Predictive Analytics. This term refers to when data is used to predict tendencies, past performance, forecasting, risk management, customer intelligence, pattern development etc. that may not be visible from analyzing one data set. The power of Big data is the combination and depth of sources that are combined to create useful information. Several characteristics of Big data are: Volume, Variety, Velocity, Variability, Veracity, and Complexity. These components can determine the amount, quality and accuracy of the data created and used by the organization. The enterprise systems used to analyze, data mining, curate, create and disseminate the data created have the capabilities to effectively turn the data into useful actionable data for organizational use. Once data is aggregated and recompiled it can be given contextual relevance and then become pertinent. Many vendors in this space accommodate many industries and verticals as data can be made to specifically conform to organizational requirements.
